A couple of days ago, my husband and I were enjoying our usual lazy Sunday afternoon when he asked me to look up a song he had heard on the radio. Quickly I pulled up the mysterious song on my iPad and listened to it while we laid on our comfy bed. By the end of the beautiful ballad by Dawes, we were both tearing up while holding each other tight. With the approaching of our first wedding anniversary (today to be precise!), one part of “A little bit of everything” really stuck out,
“I think that love is so much easier than you realize
If you can give yourself to someone, then you should
‘Cause it’s a little bit of everything
The way you joke, the way you ache,
It is getting up before you,
So I could watch you as you wake.
So on that day in late September,
It’s not some stupid little ring,
I’m getting a little bit of everything.”
I have never been the kind of girl who dreams about her wedding day. I was always so focused on my studies and dance training that marriage was the last thing to cross my mind. Now that I am married and have started a family, I am really thankful for my loving man, partner, friend, and companion who accepts me for who I am and is willing to let me walk at my own pace. My heart is full because every morning I wake up next to a beautiful human being who loves me and cherishes me without reservations. Marriage is enjoying his laughter, silliness, kindness, and protection. It is unending support, heartfelt arguments that challenge my way of thinking, sweet text messages in the middle of a hectic day, and a constant reminder of how nerdy he is. Marriage is carefully packed lunches, driving forty minutes to buy his favorite beer, and staying up all night watching food documentaries while playing board games. It’s about disagreeing about the silliest things, but agreeing on the fundamentals of life. Is Marriage is about planning for the future and embracing each other’s dreams. It’s knowing you’ll never have to kill another spider, and having someone to warm up your side of the bed. Marriage is about trusting each other and learning from each other’s mistakes. It’s about reminding the other person that no matter how much we love them, God will always know them and love them best.
As cheesy as it sounds, I really do believe marriage is a little bit of everything, and I am so glad I get to share it with him.
Happy anniversary, sweetie!
